The Miiskin App General
What is Miiskin?
Miiskin is a digital health platform that helps people digitally track the appearance of skin and moles for early detection of changes, including the appearance of new moles and changes to existing moles.
Recommended by dermatologists and healthcare providers around the world, the app simplifies self-examination by helping people take high-quality photos of their skin and monitor changes over time. Miiskin can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
It is the first AI-powered (artificial intelligence), skin health app to offer individual mole and wider-body skin images and Skin Mapping to help you identify both changes to existing moles and new marks. Skin Mapping is based on the science of mole mapping methods used by dermatologists. Side-by-side photo comparisons, reminders for routine checking, and other tools empower users to identify concerns to bring to their doctor. It does not evaluate risk level or diagnose skin cancer.
Miiskin Pro is a HIPAA-compliant platform that enables a direct connection to your dermatologist when applicable, making it easy for you to communicate changes with your healthcare provider during either a face-to-face appointment or a virtual consultation.
How does the Miiskin app work?
The Miiskin app works by taking images of your skin using the app, then using the technology to monitor for changes.
Miiskin is the first AI-powered, skin tracking app to offer skin tracking using images of both individual moles and wider-body skin images. Side-by-side photo comparisons, reminders for routine checking, and a wealth of information empower users to identify concerns to bring to their doctor. The app does not evaluate risk levels or diagnose skin cancer.
The Miiskin app helps you structure a process around your skin self-examinations and allows you to take and keep photos of your skin and moles for monitoring over time. In addition to simply photographing and tracking individual moles, Miiskin uniquely provides ways to help you take higher quality photos and identify marks you may have missed.
The Skin Mapping feature lets you photograph the four largest areas of your skin. Miiskin then identifies and highlights the moles and marks that it can find on the skin. You can edit the marks highlighted by the app and save them for future comparisons. Subsequent photos can then be compared side by side to the “map” in our Web Compare portal online, with some of your moles and marks highlighted for visual support. Importantly, Skin Mapping does not take away your responsibility to look at your skin for any visual changes. Skin Mapping may make it a lot easier to keep track of large skin areas, such as the back, which can be particularly important to track and challenging to catch something new.
The Skin Mapping solution is currently available for photographs of the back and will soon be launched for the other three large areas of the skin as well. Skin Mapping is Miiskin’s consumer version of traditional mole mapping technology used by dermatologists in clinics to track skin changes over time with high-resolution imagery.
With other advanced features, such as Automatic Skin Imaging, you can simply place your phone on a table and get in front of the camera to take full-body skin photos on your own, in complete privacy. Miiskin will automatically detect you and guide you to assume the best positions while it takes full-body images. This ensures high-quality pictures are taken that can be effectively compared later.
How do I use Miiskin to track a mole for changes?
Simply take regular photos of your skin and moles then compare them to note any changes such as a changing mole or a new mole or mark on your skin.
You should take photos of both the individual moles you wish to track and wide-area or full-body photos of your skin. The Miiskin app makes it easy to take photos by touching the screen of your phone and guides you to take a consistent, high-quality photo.
Web Compare and Skin Mapping are advanced features. Skin Mapping helps you pinpoint moles so you can better compare for changes over time. Web Compare allows you to open and compare your photos side-by-side on a tablet or a computer.
Remember that Miiskin is intended to record and track changes; it is not a diagnostic tool.
How does Miiskin help me to compare pictures of my moles and skin taken over time?
The app enables you to take an image of a mole or mark and compare it side by side with a more recent image to gauge changes in the same mole or area of the skin. Through Miiskin Premium’s Web Compare, you can keep track of larger areas of your skin as well as look at individual moles.
The Miiskin app also enables the user to use Skin Mapping, which is related to a standard dermatology practice called mole mapping. Mole mapping traditionally focuses on tracking individual moles and marks on the skin for changes over time with high-resolution imagery.
Skin Mapping is useful in conjunction with the mole mapping your dermatologist performs to spot new moles and keep track of any changes in existing moles. Miiskin’s Skin Mapping helps you monitor if any new moles and other marks that have appeared on the skin by using a light version of total body photography, giving you a bigger picture view of your skin to help spot changes you might have missed in relation to other marks.
Who should use Miiskin?
It’s a good idea for everyone to maintain awareness of the condition of marks on their skin to be proactive about their health. Miiskin is particularly useful for those who need to be extra aware of any changes to their skin as they are at high risk of skin cancer due to skin type or a personal/family predisposition.
Many use the app because their doctors recommended it for them to document changes to their skin and moles over time. This could be after a medical consultation or in-between consultations. The app offers support and guidance to help take quality images, understand more about potential issues, compare images, and establish routines to stay on top of recurring checks. Advanced features offer even more capabilities to photograph and document larger sections of skin. However, Miiskin is not a diagnostic tool so a healthcare professional should always provide guidance when warranted.
Is Miiskin AI?
Yes, Miiskin uses AI (artificial intelligence and AR (augmented reality) in its Automatic Skin Imaging and Skin Mapping features.
For Automatic Skin Imaging, Miiskin deploys combined machine learning (ML) and computer vision (CV) capabilities to detect the scene and surroundings in combination with the person to photograph. The ML/CV technology augments the camera feed with a person and human posture detection for capturing and standardization of front, back, and side images of the person. The app’s augmented image capturing capabilities improve the quality of auto-photography, and the Android user is guided through the autonomous process by the Google Text-To-Speech Engine while Apple users will hear the familiar Siri voice.
Miiskin has been on the forefront of machine learning and computer vision in dermatology since the launch of the app’s popular proprietary Skin Mapping tool, which highlights moles and other marks on the skin using high-resolution imagery. However, Miiskin does not diagnose or provide risk assessment; that should only be done by a healthcare professional.
Can I show the photos taken within Miiskin to my doctor?
Yes. The photos you take with the Miiskin app are yours so you can use them in any way you wish. With Miiskin Premium, you have the ability to share a secure link to photos or photo sequences with anyone you choose via email. However, the app is a tool, not a diagnosis technology. You can also choose to show your doctor your photos in a face-to-face clinical consultation. Your doctor will choose whether to take them into consideration. Miiskin also is listed in the NHS app library in the U.K.
Esteemed physicians and educators in several countries serve as advisors to ensure Miiskin performs as specified. “Many Dermatologists including myself have long advocated the use of photographic records for ongoing monitoring. This has become easier and cheaper with the widespread use of cameras and Apps (such as Miiskin) on personal phones, tablets, and computers,” Prof. Christopher Bunker, former president of the British Association of Dermatologists and Hon. Secretary of the British Skin Foundation and Consultant Dermatologist at University College London Hospital, United Kingdom.

How is Miiskin different from using a standard smartphone camera?
The Miiskin app provides a variety of skin tracking options unavailable with standard photos. While the app does not evaluate risk levels or diagnose skin cancer, Miiskin offers the ability to put a process in place to document and monitor your skin and automates some of the most challenging aspects of skin self-exams and also cutting-edge features that makes the task of taking skin photos a lot easier. It also sets reminders to help you remember to follow through with monitoring.
It’s simple to take close-up photos with Miiskin by touching anywhere on the screen while the app guides you to take consistent, quality images. Then, your photos are encrypted and stored separately from your normal photo gallery to protect your privacy. The app enables easy side by side photo comparison within the app and on your larger screens through the Web Compare service.
The Automatic Skin Imaging feature enables you to take two full-body photos unassisted. Simply place your phone and the app will do all the work as it can automatically detect when you are in the camera view.
With a helper to take the photos, Wide Area Photos let you photograph the four largest areas of your skin – two front photos and two back photos. Simply tap the big purple button and choose “Skin Areas” to access this manual functionality functionality.
With Miiskin’s innovative Skin Mapping feature, accessed through Web Compare, a computer identifies and highlights the moles and marks that it can find on the skin. This can make the process of comparing full-body and wide-area photos a lot easier as you will then have the skin maps to help you compare your base-line and follow-up photos.
With Mole Sizing you can put a coin in your close-up photos next to any mole or lesion you want to measure with millimeter precision to see if it changes size over time. Miiskin employs Augmented Reality to help you take Mole Sizing photos.
While most of the features mentioned above are included in Miiskin Premium, Miiskin does also offer a Miiskin Basic solution. You can see more about the Miiskin app here and Miiskin Premium here as well as in the Miiskin FAQ section.
