My partner Rikke and I meet on Facebook twenty years after dating in high school – It was like a true modern-day ‘and they lived happily ever after’ kind of fairytale. Unfortunately, Rikke has many moles on her body and always needs to watch them closely for changes. When Rikke asked me to help monitor her moles and check for signs of melanoma, I did not take the responsibility lightly, since we plan to stay together for a long time.
Checking her moles was like looking at the sky, night after night, trying to identify a new or brighter star. Was this mole a newcomer? Was that mole getting bigger? I always had nagging doubts. Desperate to help my partner and frustrated about facing this ongoing concern, I thought there must be a better way. Wouldn’t the process be easier if there was a tool to compare photos of moles over time?
Melanoma is a serious skin cancer. In the U.S., one person dies of melanoma every single hour. The best prevention for this fatal disease is early detection and 98% survive melanoma if it is caught early. So my best personal advice is to change habits and make regular skin checks a natural part of your life.
I created Miiskin to help the woman I love, but I realized we weren’t alone. Whenever I talked to someone, it seemed they always knew somebody (themselves, their partners, a loved one or friend) that had a concern about moles and skin cancer. By creating a simple and easy-to-use mobile app, I hoped to reach a lot of people and help them navigate their mole concerns.
Sharing is caring – Rikke and I love to see people helping their friends and loved ones online. From sharing an article about melanoma to telling someone who would benefit about the Miiskin app, sharing is a simple pay-it-forward way to show love in the digital age. I started this for a personal reason, to help the love of my life. Now, through sharing it with you, I hope to help you and your family as well.
In just over a year, Miiskin surpassed 100,000 downloads and now has a strong dedicated team in the company and a group of international renowned professors among its advisors. The goodwill and support from the professional healthcare community has been truly amazing – everyone supports a user-friendly app that can assist people in the fight against this life-threatening disease.
Miiskin’s mission is still the same and a core part of the DNA in the company – make it easy and simple to spot mole changes for as many people as possible.
